International Sign Language Performance Group comes to the Gypsy!
We’re proud to announce the arrival of Signdance Collective, internationally touring sign-language performance theatre company on 8/29-9/5.
Weve teamed up with Wilmington Arts Council to help present a week of workshops, lectures, and performances here, and at various venues around town, including Cape Fear Community College’s Humanities & Fine Arts Center. FULL SCHEDULE OF EVENTS LISTED BELOW.
Signdance Features two international Deaf performers and two leading international dance artists. They will be presenting their new performance piece, CARTHAGE – An extraordinary monumental/ relevant new piece by award winning Cuban-American writer , winner of Village Voice Lifetime Achievement Award .The work explores – language , the meaning of ‘home’, displacement , and delves into the subject of Global immigration in a poetic and life affirming way .The work is performed in Spanish , English and international sign as well as ASL .
Funded in part – by Arts Council England, for this production we have two UK – based performers, two USA -based performers , an Italian director- Ornella D’Agostino www.carovana.org and an Austria Composer . Bianca Braswell – an emerging young North Carolina writer will be documenting the production for Arts Council England and it’s Online engagement .

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Sign Dance Open Rehearsals
Join Signdance Theatre, as they rehearse for their upcoming production, Carthage, in an open rehearsal format. Visitors are invited to watch, and learn more about the creative process behind Sign Dance, and how theatrical sign performances come to life
Basic Sign Theater
Get a basic understanding of sign language, theatrical signing, and how theatre can be expressed through sign language. Open to everyone, both deaf and hearing. Class will be expressed both vocally and in Sign.
Participants can expect to learn and use sign language in fun and creative interactive theatrical exercises.
Creative Devising Workshop
Learn sign language, and how to use it theatrically, in a fun atmosphere. Open to both deaf and hearing, this workshop will be taught both orally and through sign. Participants will have the opportunity to create an original short group performance piece to display at SignDance’s Saturday presentation at The Juggling Gypsy
