The port city will be hosting a 3-day, all-out, underground music festival this June. The hefty schedule will include performances from over 40 acts.
Wilmington, North Carolina is home to many of the acts scheduled to perform June 12th – 14th. The festival organizers have been quick to dub this event as “Wilmington’s first punx picnic” as noted in the festival’s facebook event page. Although the general impression is a punk festival theme, there will be no shortage of diversity. “Many of the people involved are fairly active in the community, most of them live here, and the event should be seen as a very community-orientated event where everyone and all are welcome to participate in the fun”, states one festival worker.
The event kicks off at Scrap Iron Bicycle Gallery in downtown Wilmington Friday, June 12th at 1p.m. The slush of sounds may be a bit much for most, but it will just be another night on the town for many local noise artists, hardcore rockers, and experimental electronic acts. Local hip-hop collective The Real Boys are scheduled to perform the first two nights of the event. Local experimental electronic singer STAHRKLUBB is scheduled to perform also; STAHRKLUBB has long-held a tight-knit relationship with experimental noise and the 910 noise boys, who will have a major presence at this event (Jason Ward, Baby Daddy, Subterrene). Friday will end with performances at Reggie’s 42nd St. Tavern. Fayetteville’s own WEIRDO will be making an appearance; their facebook page notes their genre as “punkrap”. They will surely be delivering some energy, enough to get some people dancing and having a great time.
Day two, June 13th, will be a merger, setting the focus of display from experimental music to more-punk rock bands. However, there will be some notable performances from Lil’ Skritt and his southern-charm rap, coming from Charlotte. Deadly Lo-Fi, a band which includes a person brandishing a saxophone, are also set to appear.
Closing day of the festival, June 14th, Will deliver an overall punk rock picnic. Baltimore, Maryland’s own Ratboiler and Skull theft will be in town to show everyone a great time with their energetic stage presence. MonkeyKnifeFight will be holding it down for Wilmington as the event comes to an end. The final day of the event will include the announcement of a raffle prize winner. The winner will take home a huge gift basket with them, which will include CD’s, gift certificates, a set of FREAKERS, and even some merch signed by the legendary punk band GBH.
